Surprising North Carolina Motorcycle Accident Statistics

North Carolina has one of the highest motorcycle accident death rates in the country. In this state, motorcycle accidents account for about 7% of all traffic accident fatalities. Despite attempts to educate the general population about sharing the road with motorcycles, North Carolina accidents involving motorcycle leading to fatalities have increased about 150% over the last 10 years.

Here are a few tips on how you can help make our roads safer for everyone:

For motorcycle riders:

  • Always wear a helmet. Head injury is the main cause of death in motorcycle accidents. In North Carolina, all motorcycle riders and passengers are required by law to wear a helmet. Also, make sure your helmet is up to safety standards, and replace it when it gets old and worn out. While eye protection is not required, it is recommended. You may also want to wear a motorcycle jacket and gloves to prevent cuts or road burn on your skin in the event of a crash.
  • Consider taking a class on motorcycle safety, even if you are a seasoned rider. Bike Safe North Carolina is a great option offered by the State Highway Patrol. Visit The Motorcycle Safety Foundation of NC, http://www.ncmotorcyclesafety.org/ for more information.

For other drivers:

  • Make sure motorcyclists have enough room. They have the same right to lane space as any other vehicle.
  • Always use turn signals when changing lanes or merging onto the highway, & signal before changing lanes, not after you’ve begun moving over.
  • Keep an extra 3 to 4 seconds of following distance behind motorcycles than you would behind a car or truck.
  • Check your mirrors carefully. Motorcycles could be easily hidden in your blind spot.
